Overview
Our 2026 members’ layout is a striking departure from traditional British railway modelling. This year, the latest project is basied on a modern urban cityscape built in N gauge, centred around the Kato Unitram light‑rail system. The aim is to showcase how contemporary tram networks, dense architecture, and multi‑level streets can be modelled effectively in compact spaces.
The layout represents a busy metropolitan district inspired by cities such as Osaka, Munich, and Zurich—places where trams weave through tight streets, surrounded by high‑rise buildings, retail zones, and pedestrian plazas. Members wanted to demonstrate how modern transport infrastructure can be modelled with realism, including:
- Street‑running tram lines
- Urban road markings and traffic flow
- Glass‑fronted commercial buildings
- Multi‑storey parking structures
- LED‑lit signage and street furniture
Track & Infrastructure
The layout uses the Kato Unitram modular system, allowing rapid assembly and precise alignment of:
- Embedded tram tracks
- Intersections and road plates
- Platform modules and shelters
- Overhead wiring detail (non‑functional but realistic)
This system enables smooth running for modern trams and light‑rail vehicles, with reliable electrical continuity and minimal maintenance.
Buildings & Scenery
Members have combined Kato, Tomix, and scratch‑built structures** to create a dense city environment. Key scenic features include:
- A central business district with glass towers
- A shopping street with illuminated signage
- A tram interchange with shelters and passenger detailing
- Trees, pavements, bollards, and street lamps for realism
- Traffic scenes featuring buses, taxis, and cyclists
Operations
The layout supports:
- Multiple tram routes with automated stop/start sequences
- Continuous running loops for exhibitions
- Manual driving for members during club nights
- DCC‑ready wiring for future expansion
The goal is to show how urban rail operations differ from traditional mainline running—tight curves, short vehicles, and frequent stops.
Future Development
Planned enhancements for late 2026 include:
- Additional tram models
- A night‑mode lighting setup
- A rooftop helipad scene
- More detailed pedestrian areas
