APCM Swanscombe Works
APCM Swasncombe works is a 00 Gauge Model Railway Layout, based on the Chalk pits of Swasncombe in 1970 – recommissioned in 2025 by Iain MacTaggart and the help of the GRES modelling team
Introduction
This 00 gauge model railway layout represents APCM Swanscombe Works, a major industrial site in North Kent, recreated a fictional scene but landscaped as it would have appeared around 1970.
The layout was recomissioned in 2025 and is inspired by the real railway operations that served the cement works and the surrounding industrial landscape.
The model captures a fascinating period of change on Britain’s railways, when steam locomotives were in their final years of operation and diesel traction was becoming dominant.
Historical Background – APCM Swanscombe
The Associated Portland Cement Manufacturers (APCM) works at Swanscombe was among the most important cement production facilities in the country. Extensive railway infrastructure was required to handle raw materials and finished cement, resulting in a complex network of sidings, exchange lines, and industrial locomotives.
Rail traffic included limestone and chalk movements, internal works shunting, and outward cement trains connecting with the wider British Rail network. By the late 1960s and early 1970s, the site reflected wider changes across the UK rail system.
The 1970 Setting – Steam to Diesel Transition
The layout is set in 1970, a transitional era when steam locomotives could still be seen alongside increasingly common diesel power. This allows for a varied and
interesting operating sequence, featuring:
- Final years of industrial and mainline steam locomotives
- Early diesel shunters and mainline diesel traction
- Traditional freight operations serving heavy industry
This period was chosen to reflect both historical accuracy and operational interest, showcasing the changing face of British railways at the time.
The Model Layout
The layout focuses on the dramatic chalk cliff scenery, tunnels, and industrial infrastructure that characterised the Swanscombe area. Care has been taken to
reflect the atmosphere of a hard-working industrial railway rather than a passenger-focused setting. The actual scene is fiction, but the landscaping, rolling stock and mining technics are based on the time ear represented.

Video and Media
Operating sessions, construction updates, and exhibition appearances will be
documented through video and online media.
Future Development
Further scenic detailing, rolling stock additions, and operational refinement are
planned to continue enhancing realism and historical accuracy. Additional research
into APCM Swanscombe and its railway operations will guide future updates.
